What Are Peptides? A Plain-English Introduction

What a peptide actually is, how it differs from a protein, and why chain length matters.

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Amino acids are the same building blocks that make up every protein in the body — the difference between a peptide and a protein comes down to length and structure, not chemistry.

Most researchers use a rough dividing line: chains of roughly 2 to 50 amino acids are called peptides, while longer, more structurally complex chains are called proteins. It's not a hard rule. Insulin, at 51 residues, is usually called a protein hormone, while GLP-1, at just 30, is unambiguously a peptide. The boundary is functional, not absolute.

What every peptide has in common is the peptide bond itself: a covalent link formed when the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with the amino group of the next, releasing a water molecule in the process. String enough of these bonds together in a specific sequence, and you get a molecule with a defined shape and function.

Because peptides are shorter and simpler than full proteins, they are easier to synthesize precisely, easier to purify, and easier to characterize with standard lab methods like HPLC and mass spectrometry. That is part of why peptides have become such an active area of research — the field can iterate on short, well-defined sequences much faster than it can on large, folded proteins.
